The first chapter of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy has been named the number one pirated movie of 2013. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been downloaded 8.4 million times this year, according to pop-culture site Flickering Myth.
The Oscar winning Tarantino epic, Django Unchained comes in second, with 8.1 million downloads, followed by Fast & Furious 6 with 7.9 million downloads. Iron Man 3 comes in at number 4 with 7.6 million downloads, and the masterful Silver Linings Playbook at number 5 with 7.5 million downloads.
Rounding out the list in sixth place is one of my favorites, Star Trek Into Darkness with 7.4 million downloads, followed by Gangster Squad in seventh with 7.2 million downloads, and the surprise summer hit, Now You See Me with 7 million downloads.
The conclusion to the, “I hope this never happens to me,” situational movies, The Hangover III comes in ninth place with 6.9 million downloads, and coming in as the tenth most pirated movie of 2013, with 6.7 million downloads is the Brad Pitt zombie epic, World War Z. Now that is a lot of hard drive space.
