The grueling wait has now gotten slightly shorter! Jennifer Saunders has confirmed that she is officially beginning to write the script to the long-rumored Absolutely Fabulous movie
Saunders, who starred in the cult British sitcom between 1992 and 2003, appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show, where she stated that she feels obligated to do so after teasing the project for so long. Saunders first announced her interest in a film version of the show back in 2011.
Her Ab Fab co-star Joanna Lumley continuously confirmed that Saunders was going to write it. Saunders’ friend and former co-star on French & Saunders, Dawn French wagered on national radio over christmas that Saunders would not write it this year. Saunders jokingly stated that this was the reason for her starting writing “otherwise I have to pay her £100,000.”
However, Saunders is reluctant to finish the script as she feels it has the potential to be a flop. “It’s like the second album syndrome, once you’ve had a bit of success, the last thing you want to do is go and make a flop. So the biggest fear in me is that it won’t be good enough, I’m really nervous about it.”
In addition to 31 official episodes, there have also been a combined eight specials that have aired sporadically between 1996 and 2012. There is currently no release date for the film, but if all goes well, we might see Patsy and Eddie knocking back the bolly sooner rather than later.
