If I were to ask you who the lead character in the Friday the 13th films was, there’s no doubt that you would reply with Jason Voorhees. So the mere thought that there could potentially be another Friday the 13th movie made without its Jason, bothers me. A lot.
With Paramount having regained the rights to the franchise last summer, production company Platinum Dunes (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Purge) are considering ways to make the next movie.
During the Television Critics Association Press Tour Brad Fuller from Platinum Dunes said they were considering the possibility of a found footage format for any upcoming film but also commented that he was well aware that not all fans of the films would be satisfied with that style of movie.
“I’m well acquainted with some very loud members of the audience who hate found footage and I understand that. I think for us it’s more about what the story is and what’s the best way to tell it. Until we figure out exactly what the story is for the next Friday the 13th movie, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be.”
Now this is where we get to the bothering part. When asked if Derek Mears would be returning as Jason, Fuller replied with, “I don’t know because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream so we’d be lucky to have him.”
I’m not sure exactly how we are supposed to interpret that response. There will be a film, but there might not be a Jason, but there might be, and if there is, it could be Mears, but it might not be.
I thought long and hard how to summarise this and I came up with nothing, so instead I will let the team from CinemaBlend do it for me… “Now if you guys will excuse me, I’m going to have a bowl of soup without a bowl or any soup”
As always stay tuned to PopWrapped for more information about the future of the Friday the 13th franchise and the future of Jason Voorhees.
