So, to be honest, I was totally geeking out as I scrolled through the archived images Peter Mayhew has been posting on his Twitter.

I grew up on Star Wars; had my crush on Princess Leia, pretended broomsticks were light sabers and, of course, wanted my very own R2D2. When I saw that Mayhew, who played the furry and loveable Chewbacca from the original series, was posting archived photographs from the iconic movies, I knew I had to share!

The behind-the-scenes shots show candid images of franchise stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, director George Lucas, Anthony Daniels (C3PO), Kenny Baker (R2D2) and so many more. We also get a unique look at characters that never made it into the film; did you know there was going to be a glow monster, or that a young Koo Stark played Camie in Return of the Jedi?

Mayhew started posting images on January 7, starting off with a charming group shot and the caption, “#nostalgic so I’m going to post some pics tonight. Like this 1 of Harrison, Anthony, Carrie & I sharing a laugh.” Since then he has posted over 70 images for our viewing pleasures; my favorites have been included in this post.

Thanks to Mayhew’s posts, we get to see R2D2’s “handler” Kenny Baker breathing life into another iconic character, a loveable Ewok named Paploo from the forest moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

We also get to see an 11-year-old Warwick Davis in his breakout role as an Ewok, though he later replaced Kenny Baker as the lead Ewok named Wicket; a role he would reprise in future projects before going on to star in films Willow, The Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter franchise as Filius Flitwick.

This unique look at the relationship of the actors behind the scenes and on set is something any Star Wars fan will be able to appreciate.

The original series (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi) garnished a paltry 25 Academy Award nominations, winning only 10. Might be surprising considering it’s a staple in film history and its global fan following.

Regardless of Oscar recognition, what we can recognize are some amazing images courtesy of Chewbacca.  You can keep up with future posts from our favorite Wookiee on Mayhew’s Twitter, where he says he has over 1,000 more images ready to come out of the vault!

Until then, you can enjoy a collection of my favorites so far. Enjoy, friends.
