On Monday, Empire revealed the new photos for one of the most anticipated films of the summer, X-Men: Days of Future Past… and the fans are upset to say the least.
The photo spread included photos of recurring stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. New additions to the cast include Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask – designer of the mutant destroying Sentinels- Josh Helman as a young William Stryker –mutant-hating military Colonel- and Evan Jonigkeiit as a younger Toad. But, the outrage comes from the reveal of Evan Peters as Quicksilver.
Fans took to the Twitter and compared Quicksilver’s new design to a Spy Kids villain, among other cheesy characters.
Quicksilver, who has the ability to think and move at super-sonic speeds, has in previous incarnations looked cool, decked out with fabulous hair and a powerful lightning shooting across his chest. The new Quicksilver character looks more like a rejected S.H.I.E.L.D. agent than a superhero.
The other upsetting aspect is that Quicksilver is played by Evan Peters, who has shown his acting chops in three seasons of American Horror Story, and hopefully his acting will help everyone forget how poorly costumed the character is… but that might be hoping for too much.
There are always concerns regarding decisions prior to the release of any X-Men film; fans were wary of then unknown actor, Hugh Jackman, portraying Wolverine, and that turned out to be a pretty good decision. There were also concerns that director, Bryan Singer, chose not to use the iconic comic book costumes in the film version, and instead opted for the black leather outfits, which were very practical and worked well within the universe he created. Hopefully, Quicksilver’s design will be justified once the film comes out; but, until then, X-Men fans have to endure the redesign.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on May 23, and you can take a look at the trailer below!
