Today, an Italian court handed down another guilty verdict to Amanda Knox in the 2007 murder of then roommate, Meredith Kercher. Knox’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was also re-convicted of the crime.

The first time the pair was convicted of murdering 21 year old Kercher was in 2009, but in 2011, the verdict was overturned by an Italian appeals court. In March 2013, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the acquittal, saying that there were discrepancies in the testimony that was given at trial and the jury did not consider all of the evidence presented to them.

Sollecito, currently in Italy, was sentenced once again to 25 years in prison. Things are more complicated for Knox, who was given 28 1/2 years in prison due to the murder conviction as well as an additional conviction of slander. While she is currently in the US, Italy may soon ask the United States to extradite Knox to serve her sentence. Currently, the US and Italy do have an extradition agreement; however, due to the US law of Double Jeopardy, some legal eagles do not believe that the US would extradite Knox as this law states a citizen cannot be tried twice for the same crime.

The first trial was certainly sensational and had Knox blaming her former boss, Patrick Lumumba of murdering Kercher. Mix that with the odd behavior that Knox exhibited following the murder and the fact Knox waited for hours before calling the police once she had allegedly found Kercher’s bloodied body, and you have the recipe for a modern crime novel that would keep anyone wanting more.

Knox stated earlier in the day that she will become a fugitive from Italian law if she was convicted, and released this written statement following the announcement of her conviction:

“I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system. The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. …There has always been a marked lack of evidence.”
