As many will know, next year is the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future. A special gift is being created for this occasion: a musical based on the Michael J. Fox film will debut on London’s West End.  If all goes well, it will then head to Broadway.

Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale are confirmed to be working with Universal Stage Productions.  But they intend to keep the project quiet until its unveiling next year.  Gale said, “The Back to the Future Musical is a project that Bob Zemeckis and I have been exploring for almost ten years. We’re thrilled to be at last in partnership with a creative and producing team that will create a show that is true to the spirit of the film.”

The project’s music is almost guaranteed to be great. It’s rumoured that Alan Silvestri is composing the soundtrack with Glen Ballard.  When they worked together on the Polar Express song, ‘Believe,’ the pair won two Grammys. Not to mention Donovan Mannato, who musicalized Ghost, will be producing, while Soutra Gilmore will be in charge of production design.

Talking about his creative team, Gale continued, “With all of us working together, we know the integrity of the material will be preserved in a production that will be a wonderful companion to the Trilogy. We intend to use music from the movie along with brand new songs to make a version of Back to the Future that is fresh, entertaining, and takes advantage of all the amazing things that can now be done on stage.”

Director Jamie Lloyd adds, “I was five when I saw Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale’s landmark movie, Back to the Future, and I have been a huge fan ever since. I am thrilled to be directing and co-writing this exciting new musical based on their masterful film, which has become embedded in our popular culture.”

Everyone that watched the Back to the Future trilogy has waited for 2015 to come around with bated breath. Why? Hoverboards of course! When Marty McFly went to 2015 in Back to the Future Part II, hoverboards were being used. This means that as 2015 approached, everyone hoped they may be created. Technology may not be available for actual hoverboards, but a skateboard consultant has been hired for the production.

As to who will star in the show no names have been announced yet. But who would be your ideal cast list?
