When it comes to politics, things can get a little awkward, even dirty, between potential candidates, especially if one of the candidates comes as something of a surprise. That seems to be the case for Republican Congresswoman Renee Ellmers, who could potentially be running against former American Idol runner-up, Clay Aiken.

Aiken, who came to fame in 2003 during season two of American Idol, has reportedly met with a few political figures concerning his campaign. According to the Washington Blade, he has “taken initial steps for a run, including consulting with political operatives in Washington, D.C. about a bid for the seat.”

In an interview with WMAL, Ellmers, who has represented North Carolina’s 2nd District since 2011, revealed she had no worries, taking a few jabs at Aiken’s music career. She said she would rather have his support than actually seeing him run against her.

“Apparently, his performing career is not going so well. He’s very bored,” Ellmers said. However, she did go on to say that she admires his talent and voice.

When asked if she had voted for Aiken back in 2003 when he was vying for the American Idol title, the congresswoman avoided the question, saying “As we know, he didn’t really fare all that well. He was runner-up. He also didn’t win on [‘Celebrity Apprentice’].. so I guess the next step is Congress. ” In slightly mocking him, Ellmers shows she isn’t phased by Aiken’s interest in running against her.

But how realistic is Aiken’s bid? Based on the district’s past voting, Aiken may have a difficult time as a Democratic challenger. However, Aiken has used his American Idol fame to help promote activism, co-founding the National Inclusion Project in helping children with disabilities, and he has also been actively involved in LGBT activism as well.

Despite all this, whilst it has been widely publicized that Aiken has met with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee leaders, no official announcement of him running has yet been made.
