Steven Moffat sits at the helm of two of Britain’s finest exports, Doctor Who and Sherlock. Mark Gatiss, who plays Mycroft Holmes in the latter, also has his fingers in both pies. A co-creator of Sherlock, he has also written for and acted in both dramas.
Many fans have called for a crossover between the two shows, with many suggesting recently departed Doctor Matt Smith should star in the detective series alongside Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock). In a recent interview, Moffat discussed the situation, suggesting that maybe, just maybe, the 11th incarnation of the Doctor could make an appearance in Baker Street at some point…
Okay, so let’s not get too excited. In an interview with Zap2It, Moffat said, “It’s not something we’re particularly striving for. There’s enough inevitable crossover talk between those two [Smith and Cumberbatch], it might be disconcerting for either of them to appear in the other’s show.”
However, show-runner Moffat also said, “Nothing is impossible. If there was a perfect part for him, there’s no rule against it. We wouldn’t want it to be stunt casting, because stunt casting doesn’t work, so it would have to be just because he was overwhelmingly right for it.”
“I mean, I love working with Matt. He’s a phenomenal actor. I’d jump at the chance to work with him again. I don’t know how likely that is to be on the set of Sherlock.”
Whilst Moffat’s comments are far from a confirmation that Smith will ever take part in an episode of Sherlock, it will please fans to know that it has definitely not been ruled out. Sherlock has already attracted some of the biggest names in drama, and, with series 4 and 5 already being fleshed out by the writers, we will no doubt see more acting greats cast in the show. So, is it really that much to ask to squeeze Matt Smith in just once or twice? On behalf of fangirls and fanboys everywhere… here’s hoping!
Until then, we can always watch this, genius fan-created crossover video, Wholock:
