It’s not unusual these days for a celebrity to head to the big house. Just a few weeks ago, Justin Bieber was put in the slammer for drunk driving, and Lindsay Lohan has been a prison and rehab staple over the years.

However, not many are willing to go to prison for their beliefs, but the members of Pussy Riot did, and for a brave cause.

Two members of Pussy Riot, a Russian punk rock band, were arrested in 2012 for their protest piece in a Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow, which was aimed as a criticism of the Church. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were charged with hooliganism, and sentenced to two years imprisonment.

They were released on October 23, 2013, and where did they choose to make their American television debut? Yes, on the king of cable, The Rev. Sir Doctor Stephen Tyrone Mos Def Colbert, D.F.A., Heavyweight Champion of the World featuring Flo Rida’s show, The Colbert Report.

Appearing on the Emmy winning satire show on February 4th, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were interviewed by Colbert (and the questions and answers given via a translator). A memorable moment came when the members said they attribute their freedom to their fans across the world, as opposed to Russian president Vladimir Putin (who Colbert called “a friend”). Colbert also asked them if they believe Putin releasing them is a publicity stunt for the Olympics, which is a rumor regarding their somewhat early release. Of course, they said they believe Putin made a mistake to release them. The girls then made Colbert an honorary Pussy Riot member, and in his final moment donned the trademark mask.

The interview is wildly entertaining and shows Colbert at his best, his guests certainly put on a great show, as well.
